Vitreoretinal unit

The retina…that thin nerve membrane that lines the back of the inside of the eye, consists of a group of light-sensitive nerve cells, namely cones (Cons) and rods (Rods). These cells convert light into electrical signals and send them to the visual center in the brain, via… The optic nerve and its connections. The retina is highly sensitive and susceptible to many problems such as: diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, which is linked to aging, and retinitis. The seriousness of these problems lies in their consequences, which lead to blindness (if they are not discovered and dealt with at the right time and in the most appropriate manner). These problems occur either as a result of hereditary genetic defects, diseases within the eye, or general health problems, the most important of which is diabetes. It has been proven that people with diabetes are 25 times more susceptible to blindness than those without it, as diabetes causes 5 million people to become blind (i.e. 5% of blindness cases worldwide). Diabetic blindness is considered the main cause of vision loss among young people in the world. Community (30-60 years old). Early detection and appropriate treatment can save 95% of people with diabetic retinopathy from blindness, so we care about early detection through regular examination of the eyes of people with diabetes. As for retinopathy of prematurity (which affects premature newborns), it is considered the first cause of vision loss in both eyes in children. This can be prevented by examining newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (about 6 weeks after their birth), and treating those who need them. Ophthalmology consultants…timely detection…treatment with the most appropriate method.
